Junker, Fitzgerald advance to runoff in Bandera County judge race; Baker, Schmidt win GOP nominations

Susan Junker and Dennis Fitzgerald will face each other in a Republican runoff for Bandera County judge after neither candidate won a majority in Tuesday’s primary, according to unofficial returns with all 10 precincts reporting.

Junker led the three-candidate field with 2,074 votes (42.30%), followed by Fitzgerald with 1,457 (29.72%) and Kim Manglberger with 1,372 (27.98%).

Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, Junker and Fitzgerald will advance to a Republican runoff election scheduled for May 26. Early voting for the runoff is set for May 18–22.

In the Republican primary for district clerk, Alma Baker won the nomination with 2,523 votes (55.58%). Jessica Salinas received 1,177 (25.93%) and Paula (Maier) Swinney received 839 (18.48%).

Incumbent County Treasurer Beverly Schmidt also won the Republican nomination, taking 2,742 votes (60.92%) to Mickie Towers Carnes’ 1,759 (39.08%).

Several other county-level Republican races were uncontested on the ballot. M. Patrick “Pat” Maguire was unopposed for 198th District Court judge and received 4,042 votes. County Clerk Tandie Mansfield, also unopposed, received 4,190 votes.

In commissioners races, Greg Grothues was listed as unopposed in Precinct 2 and received 844 votes, though Grothues died Jan. 22 and former commissioner Bobby Harris has been appointed to fill the unexpired term. Phil Shaffer was unopposed for county commissioner, Precinct 4, and received 1,172 votes.

All four justice of the peace races were uncontested on the Republican ballot: Mike Towers (Precinct 1) received 1,030 votes; Gina Grothues (Precinct 2) received 897; Charly Seale (Precinct 3) received 1,047; and Nell Hardin (Precinct 4) received 1,166.

Party leadership races were also largely uncontested. David Eugene Black was unopposed for Democratic county chair and received 853 votes, while John F. Irving was unopposed for Republican county chair and received 4,061 votes.

In the only contested precinct chair race listed in the county’s report, Republican Precinct 101 chair incumbent Laura Briscoe defeated Tiffany Shirey, 254 votes (64.96%) to 137 (35.04%).

Results are considered unofficial until certified and canvassed by the Bandera County Comissioners' Court.
