Master Naturalists hosting river conservation talk

The Texas Master Naturalist Hill Country Chapter will host a public presentation on river function and recovery Monday, Feb. 23, at the Guadalupe Basin Natural Resources Center.

Steve Nelle, a conservationist and author, will present “How a River Works and How it Heals Itself” at 7 p.m. The event will also be available online via Zoom.

The presentation will focus on how rivers recover after major disturbances, including floods, and how landowners can support that recovery through proper vegetation and land management. Restoring native vegetation plays a key role in stabilizing riverbanks and promoting ecosystem recovery.

Nelle has worked in conservation for 50 years, including 25 years focused on riparian management. He has trained landowners and professionals in conservation practices and authored “Lessons from Leopold,” a book about ecologist Aldo Leopold.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with refreshments served. A brief business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. before the presentation. There is no charge to attend.

The Texas Master Naturalist Hill Country Chapter is a volunteer organization sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The chapter serves 10 counties, including Bandera County, and provides training and volunteer opportunities in natural resource management.
