Grothues dies at 57, Harris fills seat

Editor’s Note: A full obituary can be found on page two.

Greg Grothues, a longtime first responder and assistant fire chief with the Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department who later served as Bandera County commissioner for Precinct 2, died Jan. 22 at his home in Lakehills. He was 57.

Grothues passed away peacefully of natural causes, according to his family. Following the death, Bobby Harris was sworn in Tuesday, Jan. 29, to fill the unexpired term for the Precinct 2 seat.

Born March 16, 1968, to Phil and Marlene Grothues, he married Gina Hoelscher in 1991.

Together, they raised their two children, Kristen and Cole, on the family ranch, where they worked cattle and continued a legacy rooted in faith, family and service.

He and his father also developed the Lake Medina RV Resort on the property, which became a longtime gathering place for family and friends.

Grothues served the community for 20 years as an assistant fire chief and EMT with the Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department before being elected to the Bandera County Commissioners Court, where he represented Precinct 2.

Friends and colleagues described him as dependable, generous and quick to help anyone in need.

“It is with profound sadness that the Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of one of our own,” the department said in a statement, calling him a friend and mentor who made a difference on “the worst day of their lives.”

The Texas Association of Counties offered condolences to Grothues’ family and the community. The Bandera County Sheriff’s Office also extended sympathy to Judge Gina Grothues and the family.

Grothues is survived by his wife, Gina; his children; and several siblings and extended family members.

Memorials may be made to the Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
