Members of the Caddel- Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas gathered earlier this month for a regular meeting that included a historical program, chapter business and announcements of upcoming events.
The meeting was called to order at 11:30 a.m. Teresa Doster was welcomed and installed as a new chapter member.
The program examined the history of Angora goats and their introduction to Texas, outlining how the breed became established in the state. Members also viewed examples of Angora garments from a private collection, which were modeled during the presentation.
Several upcoming activities were announced. Texas History Essay Contest winners will be recognized at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Grace Hall, 343 N. Getty St., in Uvalde. The induction of new member Whitney Humphrey Moreno is scheduled to take place during the event.
A field trip to Doe-Re-Mi Lavender Farm, 1381 County Road in Yancey, is planned for 10 a.m. March 12. A memorial service is scheduled for April 9 at First State Bank in Uvalde.
The 135th DRT Annual Convention will be held May 26–30 in Fort Worth. A state convention report, business meeting and covered- dish meal are planned for June 4 in Uvalde. The Children of the Republic of Texas Annual State Convention is scheduled for June 26–27 in Corpus Christi.
Members were reminded that eligible family members may apply for membership using a current DRT member as a reference.
The Children of the Republic of Texas recently hosted a Christmas party at DRT headquarters in Austin. More than 75 people attended, including state officers. Activities included games, arts and crafts, refreshments and lunch.
Area schools have been contacted regarding fourthand seventh-grade Texas History Essay Contests, with winners to be recognized Feb. 28 in Uvalde.
The chapter noted the recent death of member Mary Gwen Hunter. A memorial service was held in Kerrville.
Chapter leaders also expressed appreciation to members who assisted with recent meetings and events.
