Texas Master Naturalist chapter to host talk on water extremes

The Texas Master Naturalist Hill Country Chapter will host its monthly meeting Monday, Jan. 26, featuring a presentation on water challenges facing the Texas Hill Country amid increasing climate extremes.

The program, titled “Too Little, Too Much: The Hill Country Water Challenge,” will be presented by Clint Carter, watershed ecologist for the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held in person at Herff Farm in Boerne, with options to attend online via Zoom and Facebook livestream.

Carter’s presentation will examine how extended drought and severe flooding are reshaping the Hill Country and placing growing stress on river and riparian ecosystems.

He will discuss ecological impacts tied to long-term water scarcity and outline how geospatial technologies are being used to measure vegetation loss, assess habitat vulnerability and evaluate ecosystem recovery following major flood events, including the historic July 4 flood.

Carter leads water quality monitoring, riparian health initiatives, invasive species management and watershed restoration efforts for the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District.

He also serves on the boards of the Texas Riparian Association and the Kerr County River Foundation.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with light refreshments served. The chapter’s monthly business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by Carter’s presentation at 7 p.m.

There is no charge to attend. Herff Farm is located at 33 Herff Road in Boerne. Those wishing to attend via Zoom must pre-register.

The Texas Master Naturalist Hill Country Chapter is also accepting applications for its spring training class, which begins in March.

The volunteer organization is sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and serves 10 counties, including Bandera, Kendall and Kerr.

More information about the chapter and training opportunities is available at txmn.org/ hillcountry/.
