AUSTIN — The Texas Workforce Commission announced that Steve Pier has been appointed executive director, effective Feb. 2.
Pier brings nearly 30 years of policy and government experience to the role. Most recently, he served as deputy executive director of the Texas Department of Information Resources and as deputy chief information officer for the state of Texas.
Pier thanked Greg Abbott and the TWC commissioners for the appointment, saying he looks forward to building on the agency’s work serving Texas employers and job seekers. Before joining DIR in 2019, Pier led government relations offices at both TWC and the Office of the Attorney General, served as a chief of staff in the Texas House of Representatives and worked on multiple political campaigns.
At DIR, he helped develop solutions related to technology, procurement, finance and human resources, and oversaw functions including media and government relations, risk and compliance, data governance, project management and customer experience.
TWC Chairman Joe Esparza said Pier’s experience and strategic vision will help advance the agency’s workforce programs.
TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III said Pier’s background will be valuable as the agency adapts programs to meet the needs of Texas workers.
TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett said Pier’s public service experience and leadership will help further the agency’s mission of connecting employers with qualified job seekers.
Pier holds a bachelor’s degree from Miami University, with a double major in philosophy and political science.
