draw strong bids at livestock auction finale
The Bandera County Junior Livestock Show Association held its 90th annual show Jan. 8–10 at Mansfield Park, dedicating the three-day event to the late Robert Ashley.
Ashley, who spent 38 years working with the association, was widely regarded in the Medina community as a “ranching legacy.”
He died Sept. 14 following a battle with cancer. Members of his family accepted the Robert Ashley Memorial Award during the show’s closing events Saturday.
The Bandera County Junior Livestock Show Association concluded its 90th annual show Saturday with the Grand Champion awards ceremony and live auction at Mansfield Park.
The final day opened with a prayer led by Medina High School senior Davis Peterson, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance presented by Bandera High School senior Mary Freeman.

Peterson earned the grand champion market lamb title, with his project selling to multiple buyers for $8,500.
Freeman was recognized with the Hubert Mazurek Agricultural Achievement Award. The highest bid of the auction went to the grand champion market steer shown by Riley Teich. Winters Electric opened the bidding, joined by Native Texas Hunting Co., Phil’s Automotive and Turtle Creek Vineyard, among others. The steer sold to multiple buyers for $50,000.
The next-highest sale came from Kick Evans’ grand champion market swine, which sold for $8,000.
Additional grand champion sales included Logan Cook’s market goat for $3,500; James Bower’s market broiler for $3,000; Dakota Minor’s farm mechanics project for $2,000; Tyler Manglberger’s market rabbits for $1,500; and Brooklyn Grab’s market turkey for $1,000.
Bidders enjoyed a barbecue lunch during the auction, while favorable weather contributed to a successful closing day.
“We had great weather, which is unusual in the BCJLS season,” BCJLSA Chairman Kevin Meier said.
