The Museum of Western Art announced an upcoming exhibition titled “A.R. Mitchell: The King of the Western Pulp Illustrators,” which will be on view from Jan. 17 through April 18, in the Kieckhofer and Egloff galleries.
The exhibition will feature 55 original works by A.R. Mitchell, an artist widely known for his dramatic depictions of Western life.
The show is presented in cooperation with the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art in Trinidad, Colorado.
Mitchell was born in 1889 in Trinidad, Colorado, and worked as a ranch hand in New Mexico Territory before beginning a career in newspapers and illustration.
After studying at the Grand Central School of Art in New York City, he became a prominent contributor to Western pulp magazines, creating illustrations that portrayed cowboys, cowgirls and Native Americans in the American Southwest.
He later taught art at Trinidad State Junior College and helped establish historic sites and museums in Trinidad. He was inducted into the National Academy of Western Art at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in 1973.
A public opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Brinkman Gallery. Representatives from the A.R. Mitchell Western Art Museum, including Executive Director Allyson Sheumaker, are expected to attend.
The Museum of Western Art is located at 1550 Bandera Highway in Kerrville. More information is available by calling 830896-2553 or visiting museumofwesternart.
