County limits fireworks amid dry conditions

In preparation for New Year’s Eve celebrations, Bandera County commissioners last week approved a ban on certain fireworks, including missiles with fins and skyrockets with sticks.

Fireworks of any kind remain prohibited within city limits.

County officials noted that Bandera County is currently at a Level 1 wildfire threat.

While recent rain and mist have provided some short-term relief, officials cautioned that conditions could deteriorate quickly.

Officials say cold weather and frost can kill grass and vegetation, leaving dry fuel on the ground.

A statewide wildfire disaster declaration issued by the governor remains in effect.

The fireworks types prohibited by the order are typically not sold locally, as the commissioners’ court has enacted similar bans in previous years.

Other fireworks are still permitted in unincorporated areas of the county, though residents are urged to exercise extreme caution.

According to the Keetch-Byram Drought Index, Bandera County is currently rated between 400 and 600. The index ranges up to 800, which represents the driest conditions.

In other business, representatives from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Bandera County 4-H presented commissioners with an overview and interpretation of planned programs for 2025.
