The Hill Country Vocal Arts Society and the Symphony of the Hills will host a community sing-along performance of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, Dec. 28.
The free public event is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, located at 320 St. Peter St. in Kerrville.
Audience members are invited to take part in the performance, joining musicians from across the community in singing selections from the wellknown work.
This year marks a new partnership between the Symphony of the Hills and the Hill Country Chorale in presenting the annual post-Christmas program.
Organizers said the collaboration continues the tradition of inviting the public to participate directly in the performance rather than attend as passive listeners.
Featured soloists for the event include soprano Amy Vorhees, alto Alexis Korbe, tenor Charlie Barganier and bass Chad Ketcher.
Additional participants include Hill Country Chorale Director Claire Rabson, Susan Matteson on organ and harpsichord, Assistant Conductor Patricia Lee, and Eugene Dowdy, who serves as conductor and artistic director.
Although Messiah was not originally composed specifically for the Christmas season, Part I of the oratorio is commonly performed during the holidays and traditionally concludes with the “Hallelujah” chorus.
The program is expected to last approximately one hour.
Singers are encouraged to bring their own copies of the score, though copies will also be available at the church. The event is open to the public at no cost.
