The Lakehills Area Library is showcasing photographer Michael W. Tidwell as its December Artist of the Month.
Tidwell, an award-winning artist and synthetic organic chemist, combines his expertise in chemistry with his passion for photography. His work spans modern digital photography, large-format photography, and lightning photography, as well as historical photographic techniques that predate the Civil War, including cyanotypes, salted paper, and gum bichromate.
“Every piece I create combines luck, passion, and skill,” Tidwell said, noting that his approach often merges digital and handmade methods.
For example, he converts lightning exposures captured digitally into handmade cyanotypes or uses abstract photographs as backgrounds for water droplet collisions.
His work aims to produce “unique, authentic, and extremely diverse” images.
In addition to his photography, Tidwell is displaying a portion of his classic and rare camera collection in the library’s display case.
The exhibit runs from December 1–29 and offers a glimpse into both his artistic process and the history of photography.
