DSHS honors state’s emergency responders with awards

The Texas Department of State Health Services presented awards last week recognizing excellence among emergency medical services providers across the state.

This year’s Texas EMS & Trauma Awards, given during the annual Emergency Medical Services Conference in Fort Worth on Nov. 25, honored the contributions of four individuals and six organizations for their work supporting the trauma system and responding to emergencies in Texas.

In addition, Marble Falls Fire Chief Michael Phillips, who died in the line of duty while responding to the July 4 Hill Country floods, was inducted into the Texas EMS Hall of Honor.

During the ceremony, DSHS Commissioner Jennifer Shuford, MD, MPH, acknowledged the critical work of EMS personnel and the challenges they face.

“Every day, you bring skill, courage, and compassion to your work,” Shuford said. “You are there in the most critical moments, when seconds matter and lives depend on your calm presence and quick action. That passion for helping others is what defines Texas.”

Shuford also noted ongoing efforts to grow the EMS workforce. In the past three years, DSHS has awarded more than 3,000 scholarships for EMS education and training, contributing to an increase of more than 11,000 certified EMS professionals statewide.

Awards presented at the ceremony included the EMS Community Recognition Award, which went to the Addison Fire Department in Addison.

The EMS Education Program/Educator of the Year Award was presented to Temple College EMS in Temple.

The Interfacility Collaboration Award went to the Ben Taub Emergency Center in Houston.

The Kerrville Fire Department received the Rural Healthcare Award, while JPS Health Network of Fort Worth was named Designated Facility of the Year.

Steven Dralle, LP, of Arlington was recognized as EMS Leader of the Year.

The EMS Professional of the Year Award was presented to Daniel McDonnell, LP, of Hutto.

The EMS Response of the Year Award went to Bexar County ESD No. 2 in San Antonio.

Two individuals received the GETAC Journey of Excellence Award: Sara Jensen of San Antonio and Jim Speier, NREMT-P, CMTE, of Tyler.

Chief Michael Phillips, EMT, of Marble Falls was inducted into the Texas EMS Hall of Honor in recognition of his service and sacrifice.
