The Rose Garden Club of Medina gathered Tuesday, Nov. 18, on the old Apple Festival grounds just outside of town to unveil the community’s newest improvement: a large rock monument welcoming visitors to Medina.
The top monument measures five feet by six feet and is made of native limestone, with metal lettering greeting travelers.
Current club president Lisa Stroderd opened the ceremony by introducing Leigh Thomas, past president and chair of the sign committee, who made the presentation.
More than 30 residents attended the dedication.
The gateway monument is dedicated to longtime club member Lou Chancy, who served the organization for 24 years.
Thomas recognized the Rose Garden Club committee responsible for the project: Bev Freng; Roz and Martin Dikes; Olga and Berk Nasis; and Colleen and Wade Parsons.
“As chairman of the committee, I can tell you we needed each one of these people working together to get this done,” Thomas said.
She also outlined the yearlong project timeline and thanked several local businesses for their support.
Thomas thanked Staci and Bryan Hutzler of the Apple Store for allowing the sign to be placed on their property, which fronts Highway 16 leading into town.
She also thanked Rockscapes in Kerrville for providing the native limestone slab, a donation facilitated by club member Kristy Chancy.
Medina business partner Big Rock Construction assisted the club with guidance and installation, picking up the rock in Kerrville and transporting it to Medina.
Owner Travis Klaasen played a key role by digging the hole, securing the crane, setting the stone and pouring the concrete base.
Thomas said the work was “a huge donation to the installation of this sign.”
Solar lights donated by Rocking G Ranch will be installed to illuminate the monument at night. The club also planted and will maintain native plants at the base of the sign.
The Rose Garden Club of Medina maintains several beautification locations, including the native plants in front of the Apple Store, the garden around the apple memorial, the Medina Community Center, the Garden Patch for Medina School, the Oak Rest Cemetery and now the “Welcome to Medina” monument.
More information about the Rose Garden Club of Medina is available on Facebook. The club will conduct a tree sale beginning in January.
Orders are due Jan. 14, and trees will be delivered April 11 at the RGC Plant Sale.
