Texas Cellos, the nonprofit organization behind the summer Fredericksburg Music Festival and School, is returning to the Hill Country to present a special holiday concert, “A Nordic Christmas,” on Friday, Dec. 5.

The event will take place at the historic St. Joseph’s Halle following the city’s annual “Light the Night” parade. It features 12 professional cellists performing a program of treasured folksongs and Christmas carols by candlelight, accompanied by traditional Glühwein (mulled wine).

The concert celebrates St. Lucia’s Day, a Nordic tradition, according to Joseph Kuipers, Founder and Creative Director of Texas Cellos.

“We recreate that tradition with a cello choir, lit by candlelight while sharing mulled wine and playing Christmas carols and folk tunes in a historical venue,” Kuipers said. “It is the perfect start of your holiday season.”

The St. Lucia tradition is based on the story of a girl who carried food to Christians hiding in Roman catacombs, wearing a candle on her head and singing carols to comfort them, Kuipers said.

Glühwein service begins at 7:30 p.m., with the musical program scheduled to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of Fredericksburg’s parade.

Limited seating is available for the one-nightonly performance. Ticket links and additional information can be found at www.texascellos.org/ fredericksburg-festival.

Texas Cellos is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating excellence in youth through music education, ensemble building, and public performance.
