The Bandera Lady Bulldogs opened their basketball season Friday night at home with a 40-37 victory over the Gonzalez Lady Apaches in a physical, hardfought contest.

Senior point guard Taytum Moeller led the way on defense, recording five of Bandera’s 12 first-half steals as the Bulldogs took a 19-16 lead into halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs maintained a narrow lead into the fourth quarter but fell behind 35-36 with less than three minutes remaining.

With 90 seconds left, senior Brooklyn Grabs converted a layup off a Moeller assist to put Bandera ahead 37-36.

After a key defensive stop, Grabs scored again, banking in a jumper while drawing a foul and converting the free throw for a threepoint play that sealed the win. Grabs finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Maddie Davis added eight second-half points.

Bandera’s junior varsity team also started the season 1-0, defeating Gonzalez JV 34-17.

Freshman Blu Rollo led the Bulldogs with 17 points, nine rebounds and five steals, and sophomore Briley Clark contributed nine steals and nine rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action Tuesday with a road game at Uvalde. The JV team heads to Seguin for a tournament Saturday.
