DAR chapter to hear talk on Buffalo Soldiers

The Joshua D. Brown Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will meet at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at First United Methodist Church, 321 Thompson Drive, with guest speaker Clifton Fifer.

Fifer, a fourth-generation Texan and lifelong Kerrville resident, will speak on the “History of the Buffalo Soldiers.” He is a graduate of Howard Payne University and coached at Peterson Middle School for 33 years.

His accomplishments include being a featured storyteller at the George Bush Presidential Library, serving on the board of the new Heart of the Hills History Center, and being named Kerrville Citizen of the Year in 2021.

Fifer brings history to life through poetry, music, dance, and stories of Kerrville’s past, including the Buffalo Soldiers and the Black Seminole Indian community descended from runaway slaves.

Meetings are open to the public, and the chapter offers assistance to women researching ancestors who served in Texas independence efforts before 1846.

For membership information, contact Chapter Registrar Sharon Acevedo at [email protected] or 214-773-3700.

In other news, thirteen members of the Joshua D. Brown Chapter attended the District VIII meeting in Austin Oct. 10–11 with representatives from 18 other chapters. District meetings allow the chapter’s board to share reports on past activities and future plans.

Oct. 2 marked Gonzales Day, one of the Texas Honor Days designated by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

The day commemorates the start of the Texas Revolution in 1835, when a group of 160 Texians in Gonzales resisted Mexican troops by refusing to surrender a cannon. The cannon was famously stuffed with horseshoes, nails, and chains, and a battle flag made from Sarah DeWitt’s wedding dress bore the words “Come and Take It.” The brief Battle of Gonzales signaled the beginning of the revolution.
