Roy resolution honors flood victims, heroes

U.S. Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and August Pfluger, R-Texas, on Tuesday introduced a House resolution honoring the victims and first responders of the floods that swept through the Texas Hill Country on July 4.

The floods claimed at least 135 lives, including dozens of children attending summer camps in Kerr County, and displaced thousands more.

Federal, state and local officials reported more than 850 rescues during the disaster, which destroyed homes, infrastructure and businesses across Central and West Texas.

Roy, who represents Texas’ 21st Congressional District, said the measure is meant to remember those lost and recognize the resilience of the communities he represents.

“In the early morning of July 4th, our beloved Texas Hill Country was struck by catastrophic floods that upended our community, destroyed homes and businesses, and claimed the lives of friends, neighbors, and loved ones,” Roy said. “May God continue to protect the Texas Hill Country and all those impacted by these floods.”

Pfluger, whose district covers parts of West Texas, shared his personal connection to the tragedy, noting his two daughters were at Camp Mystic when the flooding hit.

“My wife, Camille, and I are eternally grateful that we are reunited with our two daughters … but we are simultaneously still mourning and deeply grieving with the many families who can’t say the same,” Pfluger said. “We must honor those who didn’t make it home and recognize the extraordinary bravery and selflessness of the heroes who stepped up when they were needed most.”

The resolution offers condolences to families, honors the sacrifice of first responders and volunteers, and calls on federal and state authorities to prioritize rebuilding critical infrastructure.

It also pledges ongoing support as recovery efforts continue.

More than two dozen members of the Texas delegation joined as cosponsors, including both Republicans and Democrats such as Reps. Dan Crenshaw, Lizzie Fletcher, Michael McCaul, Henry Cuellar, and Sylvia Garcia.
