A 300-pound time capsule crafted from pecan trees at Mother Neff State Park is beginning a 50year journey across Texas State Parks, with its first stop at Davis Mountains State Park this winter.

The Centennial Time Capsule contains more than 100 objects, each representing a park or program in the state system. Items were chosen to highlight the history, culture and natural beauty of Texas’ 89 state parks.

Over the next five decades, the capsule will move every six months from one park to another before being opened in 2073.

The capsule itself was built by artisans using pecan wood harvested from Mother Neff, the state’s first park, founded in 1937. State officials said the design was intended to symbolize both Texas’ natural resources and the lasting legacy of public lands.

“The time capsule is a way to preserve the story of our parks for future generations,” Texas Parks and Wildlife Department representatives said in a statement. “It’s not only about what we place inside, but also about the journey it takes and the communities it connects along the way.”

The capsule’s first host, Davis Mountains State Park, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Park rangers there will showcase the capsule at public events through the end of the winter season.

Each park on the route will add its own history by documenting the visit, building a layered record for the eventual opening.
