Chief Standingbear dead at 79

Chief Joseph Standingbear, also known as Jose Morales Jr., died Tuesday, Sept. 23, at his home in Thornton. He was 79.

Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Indian Paintbrush Hill Cemetery at the family home. Chief Jessica Singing Buffalo and Clyde Baker will speak at the service.

Morales was born Jan. 15, 1946, to Amelia and Jose Morales Sr. in Texas. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and photography.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Nicodemos Morales and Domingo Morales; and niece, Rosemary Stokes.

Survivors include his wife, Lonna Morales-Hickman; brother, Cornelio “Slim” Morales; nephews, Domingo Morales Jr. and wife, Donna; Danny Morales and wife, Rachel; Jesse Morales and wife, Sharon; niece, Elizabeth Holmes and Manny; other nieces and nephews, Leroy Morales and Rachel, Robert Morales and Rachel, Rosanna Owen and Glen, and Louise Parker; stepchildren, Joshua Patrick and wife, Stephanie, and Amber Crisel and husband, Rick; grandchildren, Hailey, Haiden, Christian, Vincent, Justyce and Daphney; a great-grandson, Erick; and numerous cousins and friends.
