Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Robert Eckels of Spring as chair of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, with a term set to expire Nov. 15, 2027.
The commission regulates all aspects of the state’s alcoholic beverage industry.
Eckels is an attorney of counsel at Husch Blackwell LLP and general counsel for Greffex, Inc. He served six terms in the Texas Legislature before being elected Harris County judge. Eckels has also served on advisory committees to former President George W. Bush and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
He is a member of the bars of Texas, New York, Colorado, and the District of Columbia, a certified fraud examiner, and a board leadership fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors.
Eckels previously chaired the Texas County and District Retirement System and was president of the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association.
He also served on the board of the Texas Association of Counties and chaired the energy, environment, and land use committee of the National Association of Counties.
Eckels is active in community organizations including the Rotary Club of Houston, K9s 4 Cops, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in technology from the University of Houston and a law degree from South Texas College of Law.
