Dozens of volunteers will be honored Sunday for their efforts to pick up trash from county roadsides, clear junk and trash from the yards of the elderly or infirmed, and recycle plastic, aluminum cans and cardboard. Don’t Make Waste Bandera (DMWB) invites other residents to join them in keeping our county clean and beautiful.
Everyone with an interest in volunteering is invited to the volunteer appreciation and recruitment event Sept. 21, from 3-6pm at the Silver Sage Hill Country Resource Center, 803 Buck Creek Drive in Bandera. Appetizers and refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public. Donations are always welcome to help support DMWB, a public charity.
Volunteer opportunities will be detailed and include a range of time commitments and types of activity.
DMWB supports county roadside trash pickups by neighborhood groups and organizations. Residents of Bridlegate, Madrona Ridge and Lake Medina Shores schedule their own pickup events, which usually take place on a Saturday morning. It’s a great chance to get to know the neighbors and to make a visible difference in the neighborhood. Opportunities also exist for families, businesses or groups to adopt a county road with support from DMWB.
Yard cleanups are scheduled for elderly or handicapped residents who don’t have the resources to dispose of accumulated items. Working with the Silver Sage Meals on Wheels program, more than thirty-five yards have been cleared over the past two years. This is also a good chance to share camaraderie with others in the community who want to support their neighbors who need a hand. These sessions could be anywhere in the county.
Recycling volunteer opportunities are available in three-hour shifts on Saturdays at the Mansfield Solid Waste Center in Bandera and at the Lakehills Solid Waste Center. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. These offer a gratifying opportunity to accept recyclables from county residents, who are appreciative of the service. Volunteers are asked to give one threehour shift a month.
An additional recycling opportunity happens on Tuesdays, when the RecycleMobile transfers recyclables from Lakehills to the Mansfield recycling center to be compacted and bound for shipping to the processor. This is a three-hour shift.
DMWB also could use volunteers in areas like fundraising and social media.
Everyone with an interest in keeping Bandera County clean and beautiful is welcome to attend this event. Learn more at www.DMWB.net, or email the organization at [email protected].
