The Joshua D. Brown Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will hold its first meeting of the 2025-26 year on Monday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Kerrville.
Carolyn Phelan, programming associate at the Sophienburg Museum in New Braunfels, will be the guest speaker.
The museum, established in 1933 on the site where Prince Carl of Solms- Braunfels laid the cornerstone for the original “Sophienburg” in 1845, was named in honor of his fiancée, Princess Sophie.
The public is welcome to attend. Assistance will be available for women interested in tracing their ancestry to the days of the Republic of Texas.
The DRT observes 13 Texas Honor Days throughout the year. September commemorates Texas Heroes Day and Texian Navy Day.
Texas Heroes Day, Sept. 18, marks multiple historical events. On Sept. 18, 1842, thirty-six volunteer Texian soldiers were killed in the Dawson Massacre.
Three survivors escaped, while fifteen were captured by Mexican soldiers at Salado Creek. Nine of the captives eventually returned to Texas, and one who died in captivity was thrown into the moat of Perote Castle Prison in Veracruz, Mexico.
On Sept. 18, 1848, the remains of 52 men who died in Perote Prison, including 16 of the 17 who survived the Mier Expedition, were interred at Monument Hill in LaGrange.
Texian Navy Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in September, honoring the first naval engagement of the Texas Revolution in 1835 near Velasco, Mexico.
In that battle, the Texian privateer San Felipe forced the Mexican war schooner Correo to surrender, marking the Texian Navy’s first victory at sea, one month before the first major land battle at Gonzales.
Founded in 1891, the DRT is the oldest patriotic women’s organization in Texas and one of the oldest in the United States. The Joshua D. Brown Chapter meets on the fourth Monday of each month from September through May.
