The Bandera High School speech and debate team opened its season Saturday at the La Vernia Texas Forensic Association tournament.
Junior Claudia Alameda placed fifth in prose out of 37 competitors.
In congressional debate, sophomore Luke Parks reached the semifinals and also advanced to the semifinals in domestic extemporaneous speaking. Junior Aiden Garcia and senior Sydney McDaniel also were congressional debate semifinalists.
Senior Alyssa Ruch competed in Lincoln-Douglas debate, finishing with a 2-1 record.
The team also included first-time competitors. Junior Tristan Boyes and freshman Michael Ellingson both took part in congressional debate.
