Officials warn of rising hot car deaths

State surpasses 2024 total before mid-July

The Texas Department of State Health Services is urging the public to take precautions after four children died in hot cars across the state within a two-week span. The number of fatalities has already surpassed the total reported in all of 2024.

As of July 9, the Texas Heatstroke Task Force reported 15 child hot car deaths nationwide this year.

“The heatstroke death of a child is a tragedy too often repeated in our state,” said DSHS Commissioner Dr. Jennifer A. Shuford. “The temperature inside a vehicle can rise nearly 20 degrees in 10 minutes, and heatstroke will occur when a child’s body can’t cool itself quickly enough. Children — and pets — should never be left in the car for any length of time.”

Heatstroke in a parked vehicle is the second-leading cause of vehicle-related deaths in children under 15, following only car crashes. Officials say circumstances vary: some caregivers may forget a child is in the vehicle, while others may underestimate how quickly the interior can heat up. In other cases, children enter an unlocked car on their own and become trapped.

“Cracking a window does not protect your child or pet,” Shuford said.

DSHS offers the following safety tips: Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, even if the air conditioning is running.

Always check the back seat before exiting the vehicle. “Look Before You Lock.”

Don’t assume it can’t happen to you. A change in routine or distraction can lead to a forgotten child.

Use reminders, such as placing a phone, bag, or shoe in the back seat.

Keep vehicles locked and keys out of reach at all times.

If a child is missing, check pools, water sources and vehicles immediately, including the trunk.

If you see a child alone in or around a vehicle, call 9-1-1.
