Chuck Lutke, executive director of the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic, has announced his retirement, bringing to a close eight years of what community leaders describe as transformational service. Lutke, 73, will officially step down Dec. 31, though he is expected to depart earlier due to vacation and other leave.
According to a press release, he has led the nonprofit since January 2018 and is credited with strengthening the clinic’s finances, expanding outreach and raising its regional profile.
“Chuck has been a force for good at the Nagel Clinic, and his leadership has left a mark on the organization as well as the lives of countless people in Bandera and throughout our region,” said Austin Dickson, CEO of the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. “He has not only been an organizational leader, but to quote MLK, a ‘drum major for justice’ for the underserved.”

During Lutke’s tenure, the clinic’s annual fundraising revenue from its Cork & Fork event grew by 477%, and its total liabilities and net assets increased by 1,128%, according to a clinic press release.
He also oversaw the launch of a professional newsletter that now reaches more than 3,500 households and built partnerships with foundations, churches, businesses, and donor families, according to the release.
Lutke attributed these achievements to the strength of the clinic’s team.
“I have been fortunate to work alongside an engaged and supportive board, staff and volunteers,” he said. “I am forever grateful to them all.”
Beyond his role at the clinic, Lutke has been active in the community, serving on the boards of the Bandera Kronkosky Library and the Bandera County Democratic Club and advising fellow nonprofit leaders throughout the county.
Following his retirement, Lutke plans to remain in the San Antonio area.
The clinic’s board of directors, led by President Mike Mulherin, has formed a search committee to identify its next executive director — the fifth in the clinic’s 18-year history.
Founded in 2008, the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic provides free health care to eligible Bandera County residents. The clinic serves more than 1,500 people each year.
