Dr. Sabrina Adrian will present a free patriotic pipe organ concert in celebration of Independence Day at 3 p.m. Friday, July 4, at First Presbyterian Church, located at 800 Jefferson St.
The program opens with Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and concludes with a rousing rendition of “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” arranged by E. Power Biggs.
Throughout the afternoon, Adrian will perform a mix of patriotic standards and contemporary American compositions, including “The National Anthem,” Dudley Buck’s “Variations on the Star-Spangled Banner,” Richard Elliott’s “Rally Around the Flag,” and “Variations on Yankee Doodle.” Other selections include “Elegy: The Cradle of Liberty” by Pamela Decker, “When in Our Music God is Glorified” by Calvin Hampton, “O Beautiful, For Spacious Skies” by Emma Lou Diemer, “Semper Fidelis” by John Philip Sousa, “Monument” by Brenda Portman, and Charles Ives’ “Variations on America.”
The concert will be performed on the church’s 2006 Jehmlich organ, a house-sized instrument built and maintained by Jehmlich Orgelbau of Dresden, Germany.
The organ features three keyboards, 183 keys, 61 pedals, and 55 ranks containing 3,500 pipes, offering a vast range of sonic combinations and dynamic possibilities.
Adrian earned her degrees from Southwestern University, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and other institutions.
