The Bandera County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an ongoing phone and text scam involving fake law enforcement officers demanding money for missed jury duty or other minor offenses.
According to Sheriff Josh Teitge, multiple citizens have reported receiving calls or texts from individuals claiming to be officers with the sheriff’s office.
The scammers tell victims there is a warrant for their arrest and direct them to pay a large sum of money to avoid jail.
Officials emphasized that the Bandera County Sheriff’s Office will never request payment or attempt to resolve criminal charges by phone or text.
“Please do not comply with these demands,” Teitge said in a statement. “Hang up immediately, document the phone number, and report it to sheriff@ banderacounty.org.”
The department believes the callers are using fake numbers and may be located outside the country.
Information provided will be forwarded to federal authorities.
Victims who have lost money in the scam are urged to call the sheriff’s office non-emergency line to file a report with a deputy.
