State’s parks department launches podcast

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is inviting Texans to explore the state’s natural beauty through a new podcast, “Better Outside,” launching May 21.

Hosted by Morgan O’Hanlon, senior writer for Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine, and TPWD Executive Director David Yoskowitz, the show promises an immersive audio journey into stories of conservation, recreation, and outdoor adventure across Texas.

“People are at the core of conservation work in Texas,” Yoskowitz said. “I’m excited for you to hear their voices straight from the field, so they can share why the work they do matters and the impact it makes.”

Listeners can expect to be transported to diverse locations where efforts are underway to protect and enjoy Texas’s ecological treasures.

Episodes will cover topics such as building new trails, exploring state parks, restoring endangered species like bighorn sheep, and tracking feral hog bounty hunters in the Hill Country.

O’Hanlon, who is also an avid adventure sports enthusiast, said the podcast aims to inspire listeners to try new outdoor activities. “In our episode on the Devils River, I took my non-outdoorsy mom on one of the state’s most feared paddling trips,” she said. “You’ll hear straight from her about the challenges I put her through — and why she would do it again.”

The “Better Outside” podcast will be available on all major platforms and at BetterOutside.com.

The launch continues TPWD’s tradition of audio storytelling following its previous podcast “Under the Texas Sky,” which ran from 2019 until recently, as well as the long-running radio segment “Passport to Texas,” which aired for 26 years.

Archived episodes of both earlier programs remain available online.
