County organizers seek volunteers, participation for coming Smithsonian exhibit

The nationally recognized Smithsonian traveling exhibition Museum on Main Street is coming to Bandera County this summer, and organizers are calling on local volunteers and businesses to help bring the experience to life.

The exhibit, titled “Crossroads: Changes in Rural America,” will run from June 21 through July 26 at the Bandera Middle School cafetorium.

It will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

In addition to the main exhibit, satellite installations and locally curated displays will showcase stories, photos, and memorabilia unique to Bandera’s past and present.

One such initiative encourages Main Street businesses to contribute by telling the stories of their buildings.

“If these walls could talk, what would they say?” said Patricia Moore, director of the Bandera County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We’re inviting business owners to reflect on the history of their buildings—who was there before, what changed, and why they chose to open up shop in Bandera.”

Participating businesses will be provided with Smithsonian- branded signage and included in an official exhibit map available at the main venue and throughout town.

There is no cost to take part, but confirmation of participation is required by May 25. Displays must be installed by June 15.

Meanwhile, community members age 16 and up are encouraged to volunteer as docents for the exhibit.

Volunteers will help guide visitors through the displays, share local stories, and assist with interactive activities.

“This is a chance to be part of something special,” said volunteer coordinator Sara DeVries-Sandifer. “You don’t have to be an expert— we’ll train you.”

Training sessions will be held at American Legion Post 157, 205 12th St., from 10 a.m. to noon on June 3, 6, 17 and 19.

Volunteers must provide their own transportation and submit a completed application and photo ID.

Students will be paired with adult docents. Documentation of service hours is available for those completing hours for school or professional programs.

To sign up, use the QR code posted at designated volunteer sites or contact DeVries-Sandifer at kjsandifer@ gmail.com or 210845-0821. Businesses interested in participating should reach out to Moore at director@ banderacowboycapital. com or 830-796-3045.

“This is more than a museum exhibit,” Moore said. “It’s a community celebration— and we want everyone to be part of it.”
