A group of local volunteers gathered April 5 to help clean up the Bandera Cemetery. Scarlett, Marie, Olivia and Jaxson Monroe; Trey Sanders; and Jadon and Benjamin Dower were among those who participated in the effort, which was organized by the Bandera Cemetery Board. The Bandera Cemetery dates back to at least 1851 and includes graves of early community leaders and veterans of conflicts as far back as the Mexican-American War. The land was originally owned by Hendrick Arnold, a free African American who served as a guide and spy during the Texas Revolution. It was later deeded to the Bandera Cemetery Association, formed by seven local women in 1907. The board thanked the volunteers for their contribution to preserving the site’s condition and legacy.
