Both the City of Bandera and the Bandera Independent School District are in the middle of the filing period for candidates wanting to run in November for places on the Bandera City Council or the school district’s board of trustees.

Each governing body has three positions up for election on Nov. 5, but candidates for one of the school board seats have until 5 p.m. on Aug. 19 to file their candidacy statements, while council candidates have until the end of the day on Aug. 22 to file.

Council positions currently held by Rebeca Gibson, Lynn Palmer and Thomas McEachin will be decided by the Nov. 5 vote.  Applicants must be a resident of the city on election day to file for a place on the ballot.

Palmer and Gibson, a two-term council member who is serving as Bandera’s mayor pro tem, were elected to two-year terms in November 2017, while McEachin was unopposed in seeking the one year left on a council position up for election last year.

Council members are elected to serve at large rather than representing a specific district within Bandera.

Those wanting to secure a place on the ballot can go by the Bandera City Hall headquarters at 511 Main St. during office hours to obtain an application to run and to file the application in person.  The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

Candidates also can submit applications by mail.  The address for the city is P.O. Box 896, Bandera, Texas, 78003.

Applications submitted by mail must be postmarked by Aug. 22 to be valid, officials said.

In the BISD, Place 5 on the board, currently held by Trustee Brittany S. Hicks, Place 6, held by Trustee Heidi Battle, and Place 7, held by Trustee Greg Butler, are up for election Nov. 5.

Candidates for the school board have to be at least 18 and a resident of the school district to seek office there.  Trustees serve one of seven places on the board, but they are elected at large and serve the entire district.

Candidates can file for election during weekdays until Aug. 19 at the BISD central office, at 815 Pecan St. in Bandera, or they can submit their applications by mail to P.O. Box 727, Bandera, Texas, 78003.
