A store called Spirits of Texas selling Texas made products will have a soft opening in downtown Bandera on Friday, July 5, followed by opening ceremonies on Saturday, July 6, featuring a Texas singing and writing heavyweight, Kinky Friedman, and two luminaries from professional sports, Terry Bradshaw and Pete Rose.

The store at 1107 Cypress St. between Main and 11th streets is the brainchild of Nancy Harvey, a sports agent and businesswoman who said she felt Bandera needed a retailer that sold exclusively Texas products, many of them sourced from area artisans and businesses.

“I will not go out of state,” said Harvey about her plans for stocking the store, which is at the location that Gunslinger fashions once occupied.

The store will offer cut glass, paintings, jewelry, t-shirts, beer, wine and eventually hard liquor, salsa,   cigars, books, both by Texans and about Texas, and other items made in Texas.

“And if we don’t have it, we’ll do our best to get it,” said Sandra Wolfe, the store’s manager.

There will be a tasting room for the alcohol sold at the store inside the 5,000-square-foot store that has been remodeled and given a more Texas feel than what was in the former building. The alcohol can be sampled at the store but sold only by the bottle or case, not the glass.

“We’re not a bar,” said Harvey.

She also said there will be no consignment offerings in the store.

The store’s owner also is a sports agent who once owned and ran a National Indoor Football League team called the East Texas Timber Rattlers, which won two divisional championships.

She and her business partner are agents for Rose, an All-Star player for the Cincinnati Reds known as “Charlie Hustle” who holds the Major League Baseball record for the number of games played – 3,562 – and the number of hits – 4,256 – but was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling.

She has been friends for awhile with Bradshaw, a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers who led that team to four Super Bowl titles and was named the MVP of two of those championships.  He since has become a pro football analyst with Fox Sports and had appeared in TV programs and films.

Harvey also has gotten to know Friedman, an irreverent singer-songwriter who helped pioneer outlaw-country music in the 1970s who went on to become a noted mystery writer and columnist and ran for the Texas governor’s office and for the state’s agriculture commissioner’s post.

Friedman later got involved in business ventures, including a line of cigars and tequila, called Man in Black Tequila.  Those products and his books and music will be available at the store.

All three of the personalities will be at the store for the opening on Saturday, and Friedman also should be there Sunday, July 7, though Rose and Bradshaw may need to leave that day.

Harvey said she has tried to specialize in unique vendors for the store who make great products but have no place to display and sell it. Many of the vendors she’s found through personal contacts.

She said the section of the store that is most special to her is a cabinet filled with handmade bowls, plates, candle holders and other objects made by a friend who produced the pieces in his therapy sessions while in treatment for Agent Orange-related cancer.

The friend, Raymond Moon, died about a year ago.

All the proceeds from the sale of his products will be donated to the Blue Water Navy Fund, which is funding research on treatments for cancer springing from contact with Agent Orange, a powerful herbicide used during the Vietnam War.

The store also will have a table set up with coloring books and other activities for children so they can enjoy themselves while their mother and father shop.

Store hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
