City Council’s conduct chastised

Bandera is the only place I have ever lived that put kids’ entertainment above property rights.

The June 19 meeting of Bandera City Council about the skate park was exceedingly contemptuous and dismissive of people and those rights.

A 9th Street property owner was, in effect, accused of lying. Owners were told they “should have known” the area was “already noisy” due to the 11th St. Cowboy Bar; they should have read the newspaper to check on council actions; they should have gone to council’s website; they should have attended its meetings.

The burden should not be on residents. Some don’t have computers. The paper’s not free. Some may have a personal crisis. And the meetings weren’t convenient. Council admitted that when it voted to change the date and time to accommodate some of its own members.

Our constitution protects minorities. But I saw none of that in the derision heaped on homeowners in the 8th street area - people whose property values could decline due to the skate park, who faithfully paid their property taxes for years, who upgraded their properties benefitting a town with far too many dilapidated structures.

City Council isn’t transparent as it claims. It stubbornly refuses to reveal why two men with no expertise in engineering, architecture or city planning decided to change the skate park from 3rd Street, as outlined in the Master Plan, to 8th Street. That began this debacle.

This native Texan now lives in the county. But I have some advice for Bandera’s residents: form a monitoring group. Make sure one of you attends every council meeting so you can protect yourselves.

Otherwise, democracy (and your property rights) will die in darkness.

Property rights are already dead. We are being taxed out of our homes by a greedy tax assessors office.
