Remember the old storyline in many movies. The story of weak playboy Bruce Wayne becoming “Batman” who saves Gotham City from its enemies. When I was a kid the comic books would show this skinny man lying on the beach and some strong bully kicks sand all over him as he walks by. Then the skinny man takes a Charles Atlas body-building course and beats up the bully. Remember Popeye being pulverized by Bluto who capture Olive Oyl. So Popeye eats his spinach that makes him strong enough to rescue Olive Oyl and flatten Bluto. Hollywood has made billions on this simple theme….. Well, it is true.

Dear friends, we, the church, are that skinny man lying down getting sand kicked on him. We are Popeye without his spinach being pulverized by our enemy. Our pews are filled by nominal Christians and Sunday only Christians who are decent enough, but frightened to see or consider that we are in a war and are losing. Satan is challenging us to do something about it. That sand has been kicked on us first a little at a time, and now it is being poured on us by the buckets.

Are we, the church, going to take it lying down or to we have the boldness and courage to first pray night and day for the Holy Spirit (our spinach) to fill us with power and with zeal that comes with Jesus’ baptism. It came with fire to the 120 praying night and day in the upper room, as described in Acts, Chapter 2. And the Holy Spirit can fill us with fire once again. Dear friends, the world and Satan need to see that power and fire of God in us once again. Jesus told His disciples, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8).

Consider Jesus’s life as our model. He was baptized with the Holy Spirit coming upon Him as He came out of His water baptism. Then He went through 40 days and nights in the wilderness being tempted by Satan but defeating him with the Word of God. Then He began His ministry full of the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:21-4:15).

That power and zeal is the only way we are going to overturn what Satan has done in this country. “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8) “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6). We also need to be discipled until we manifest Jesus on earth

In us, Christ in us, the hope of glory (Col 1:27). 1 Chronicles Chapter 12 tells us the “mighty men” were all discipled before coming to David to make him king over all Israel. Then they knew how to use their several weapons of war, and they knew their appointed place in David’s army, their passion and gifts.
