The Medina baseball team completed pre-district play on Friday, March 26, against Winston School of San Antonio, triumphing 15-0 at home.
Pitcher Jonathan Crowther, junior, led the Bobcats on the mound, striking out six, allowing no hit and giving up zero runs, before Seth Ashley, freshman, came in to secure the shutout with one strikeout.
Catcher Wyatt Boatman threw out the only runner daring enough to a base.
The offense was a steady force, scoring 15 runs on six hits, led by Branson Wickham, who went 2-3 with 1 RBI.
Zac Bryant, senior, and Britton Wickham, sophomore, each had 2 RBIs of their own.
Bryant hit the lone homerun of the game, and Wickman, wearing the number four on his jersey, made a gutsy head-first slide into home plate to for another run for the home team.
The team opened district play on Tuesday, March 30, at home against Menard. Results of that game were not available by the Bulletin’s deadline.
Medina goes on the road to games against Bracket on Tuesday, April 6, and then Menard a week later on 13.
Before the game, Medina baseball Coach Bryce Sorbel visited with the Bulletni.
“I started in February last year, and just like other coaches and their players, the COVID-19 robbed the spring season from all of us,” the 25-year-old coach said.
“When the 2021 season came around, I was really excited, and the players too. We had to wait for the basketball season to be over to get seven more boys and enough for a team,” Coach Sorbel said.
He said the 2020 lost season left the current team a little rusty at the beginning, but the team has made progress.
“It is good to have a challenging schedule, and it is making our team better and better,” the coach said.
