The Medina girls basketball team played two district games over the break that fell right after they came back from the Christmas break.
Medina girls played D’Hanis on the road on Dec. 29.
The girls played hard, but it was not the best night for the girls team overall. We just didn’t play as good as we know we could have.
D’Hanis was a well-rounded team, but overall, we just did not play well as a group compared to how we have been playing.
This is a great group of girls that are improving this girls basketball program weekly, and the girls talked afterwards about not having a showing like that again.
Medina then had to make up another road game against Leakey, and the girls were on fire.
We were short handed over the break, having three varsity girls out.
Once they figured out that we could rotate differently and just play basketball and have fun, it was a great game against Leakey.
The game on Wednesday, Dec. 30, went into overtime, and Medina girls fought the whole way.
We ended up fouling out four girls with two minutes left in overtime, barely losing the game.
I am so proud of how they played defensively and then kept a fire going on offense.
We talked over the break about everyone believing they can score, and I can see the overall confidence growing from game to game.
I have seen in the past that as a group they didn’t believe they could win these big games, and now it’s coming together and really fun to watch them believe they can win these games.
It was big to play Leakey that close, knowing we had three girls out and still finished the game with a chance to win.
I keep saying it and I really believe it: the girls basketball team is up and coming, and if you have not watched them play yet, you should show up and see them in live action.
