After dropping its second district game of the season in Wimberley, the Bandera boys’ varsity basketball team returned home on Jan. 24 and took on the Fredericksburg Billies, who entered the game undefeated with a record of 25-0 and 2-0 in district play.
The Bulldogs and Billies went basket for basket in the first quarter, as both teams got good shot opportunities as a result of good ball movement and floor spacing. At the end of the first, the Bulldogs trailed 16-14.
In the second quarter, Fredericksburg continued to hit perimeter shots and tightened up defensively on the Bulldogs, allowing the Billies to take a 32-21 lead into halftime.
Offensive struggles that have plagued the Bulldogs throughout the year arose again in the second half. Bandera scored 8 points in the third and fourth quarters combined, falling to Fredericksburg 77-29.
“Fredericksburg has a great program and are very well coached at every level, with athletes who have been playing together for years and have bought into each other. They moved the ball very well and made some tough shots that were contested. We have to continue improving defensively by pressuring the ball more and boxing out more aggressively for rebounds,” said Bandera’s Head Basketball Coach Carl Lee. “Offensively, we continued to improve on moving the ball well and had good scoring opportunities, we just couldn’t finish at the basket, and the perimeter shots did not fall.”
The loss left the Bulldogs with a season record of 4-23 and 0-3 in district play.
Bandera hosted Boerne on Jan. 28 and then played at Llano on Friday, Jan. 31. The results of those games were unavailable through mid-week.
