The King is Coming

Editor’s Note: This is the fourth in an ongoing series.

God is in control.

As we look at the task of the church in the context of Jesus’s return to earth, we need to remember: God created the earth and gave us His Word to guide our thoughts and actions as kings and priests to reign on earth (Revelation 5:10).

In the 18th century, He gave us our first great spiritual awakening that influenced our founding fathers to declare our independence from England, resulting in the Revolutionary War. Then in the 19th century, God gave us our second great spiritual awakening that influenced our national leaders led by President Lincoln to fight the Civil War, freeing the slaves.

Then in the 20th century we fought two global world wars, and a global cold war telling us clearly that our nation is a part of the global community. We also had a multi-faceted social war in the 1960’s which the government attempted to wage and lost due to the church largely losing its faith-grasp that God, not government, is in control. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King understood this, and he was assassinated.

So, now as we become prepared for Jesus’s return to earth, we need to return to our spiritual roots found in the Word of God and led by the Holy Spirit. In our triumphs of World War 2 our strength lied in our apprehending we are a strong middle-class society with our roots in the Word of God, loving our neighbors as ourselves and joining together in churches.

Statistics tells us the craving for wealth has affected the thinking of our society, birthing the desire to be rich and have financial freedom to buy anything you might want. Now, we average over 2,000 new millionaires every week in the U.S. “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptations and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition” (1 Timothy 6:9).
