The Bandera County Republican Party gathered Saturday morning for their precinct and county convention at the Lakehills Civic Center, where the ten county precincts gathered to choose 15 delegates and two alternates to represent Bandera County at the upcoming Republican Party of Texas State Convention later this summer.

The convention was delayed from its scheduled 10 a.m. start time because there was a line out the door for registration.

In Saturday’s main order of business, the county precincts presented 41 Bandera County resolutions that will be considered at June’s state convention, where they will be debated for adoption, amendment or rejection.

The Bulletin has submitted a request for complete details of these resolutions and will cover them in next week’s issue.

Additionally, those precincts previously without a precinct chair elected a convention precinct chair.

In total, 72 delegates attended Saturday’s convention, which was convened by current party chair Lynn Haueter.

A censure by the party’s executive committee, which was called unenforceable by state officials, instructed Haueter not to participate in either the county or state convention, but she convened the convention without any voiced objection on Saturday.

Officers for the convention included Caroline Rutherford as Credentials Chair and Michael Derry as Parliamentarian.

Bob Haueter was chosen to be Organization Chair, Dora Schneider as Nominations Chair, Caroline Rutherford as Credentials Chair and Becky Lay as Resolutions Chair.

Bobby Harris and Lynn Holt were chosen as Permanent Convention Sergeants at Arms.

Nominations for Convention Chair were opened; Lynn Haueter and Conrad “Butch” Streigl were put forward as nominees.

After Streigl spoke on his behalf, Haueter chose Schneider, a longtime serving precinct chair, to speak on her behalf.

A vote was counted by four attending delegates, two of which were chosen by each candidate.

After tallying the votes, the count came to 48-26 in Haueter’s favor. Concern was voiced that a total of 74 votes were counted when there were 72 people on the roster. After additional discussion, Streigl voiced his concession.

As there was a significant amount of resolutions, a motion was made to pass them all for state consideration without discussion. Following an objection to this, a ten-minute recess was held so attendees could review each individual resolution.

Following the recess, the motion was again made to pass all resolutions for state convention consideration. This motion passed, though it was not unanimous.

Haueter, whose term as party chair ends before the state convention in Houston this June, said she was pleased the good business of the party was completed.

“Despite the criminal investigations taking place in relation to our local party, I’m pleased that our county Republicans came together to ensure Bandera county will be well represented at the state convention,” she said. I also want to express deep gratitude to those individuals who served as Committee Chairs, Parliamentarian and Secretary. They expended a lot of time and work to help ensure a successful convention process.”
