Families in Bandera County have until Tuesday, June 30, to apply for more than $1 billion in pandemic food benefits available to qualifying children in Texas from families that temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price school meals because of school closures, officials said.
The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer benefits, or P-EBT, financed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are designed to provide eligible families with a one-time payment for each child who previously received free or reduced-price meals.
Officials said P-EBT works the same way Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits do and will help families get the food they need during the current pandemic.
A child must attend school in Texas for the family to be eligible for the aid. The P-EBT amount for each eligible child is up to $285, a news release about the program said.
Families that received SNAP benefits for March this year with children between the ages of 5-18 do not need to apply. All others seeking the assistance must apply, even those who applied for SNAP benefits in April and May.
The online application for the benefit program can be found online at yourtexasbenefits.com/ Learn/PEBT. Applicants are asked to complete the entire application to see if their child is eligible.
A P-EBT call center can be reached at 833- 613-6220 to assist families in completing applications.
