The Bandera City Council unanimously declared Jan. 9-15 Public Works Appreciation week during their regular meeting on Jan. 3.

City Administrator William Cox said public works employees were pulled off of Christmas Vacation during mandatory shifts for work mandated by freezing weather.

“While we were all enjoying Christmas time, our families and a warm house, they were in ditches full of water fixing pipes on Christmas Eve, Christmas day, even the day after,” said Cox “I just really want to acknowledge what they do for us, as we don’t see what they do behind the scenes.”

Mayor Rebecca Gibson recognized Public Works Director Lance Roy and utility worker Brian Gillaspy, then read the official proclamation for the week.

The proclamation was as follows: “Whereas, Public Works services provided in our community are an integral part of our citizens’ everyday lives.

“Whereas, the support of an understanding informed an appreciative public is vital to the efficient operation of Public Works systems and programs including water, sewer, streets, parks, and maintenance of public buildings to provide these essential services to our citizens.

“Whereas, the health, safety, and comfort of Bandera greatly depends on these facilities and services.

“Whereas, the quality and the effectiveness of these facilities, as well as their planning design, construction, and maintenance is vitally dependent on the efforts and skills of Public Works employees.

“Whereas, the efficiency of the qualified and dedicated personnel who staff Public Works department is materially influential and implemented by the people’s attitudes, understanding the importance of the work that they perform.

“Now, therefore, I Rebeca Gibson, Mayor of the City of Bandera, do hereby proclaim the week of January 9-15, 2023 as Public Works Appreciation Week. In the City of Bandera, I call upon all employees, citizens and businesses to join me and the City Council in recognizing the contributions that Public Works employees make every day for our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.”
