The Bandera American Legion Post 157 opened its doors for National Voter Registration Day last Tuesday, September 28, at their legion hall.

First observed in 2012, this nonpartisan civic holiday offers a platform for people to register to vote in our democracy during a one-day production coordinated by various different organizations, such as non-profits, governments and businesses.

Nearly 4.5 million voters have registered to vote on this holiday to date, according to the organization’s website.

For more information about the nationwide event or how to register to vote, visit nationalvoterregistrationday.org.

Susan Junker, Com mander at Post 157, organized the event, making their local venue more convenient for the community.

The Bandera County Board of Elections helped provide the volunteer deputy registrars that helped with the full day event, along with the patriotic promotional items and pamphlets available for visitors.

Junker, a 25-year Army veteran, has been Commander at the American Legion Post 157 for two years.

When the bloodmobiles were ceased in 2020 due to the pandemic, Susan was committed to bring the life-giving blood back to the county. Now, the American Legion coordinates the ongoing blood drives for the community.

The American Legion, incorporated by Congress in 1919, is a veteran’s organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. Their programs encompass veteran’s affairs and rehabilitation, national security, making a difference in the local community and strengthening the family unit.

To help raise funds, the American Legion Post 157 hosts local events, such as the Retired Teacher’s Association, the Bandera Wranglers and the Chamber of Commerce.

If you are interested in using the American Legion Post 157 for your meeting or event, located at 205 12th St. in Bandera, contact Susan Junker at junkersl@me.com or 210-788-9160.
