Board appoints interim superintendent, recognizes students

The Bandera ISD Board of Trustees named Gary Bitzkie Interim Superintendent at their monthly meeting on Monday, August 9.

The board adjourned the Regular Meeting at 7:16 PM and went into Closed Session to discuss the appointment of an interim superintendent. The Board returned at 7:41 PM and announced the appointment of Mr. Bitzkie.

Bitzkie has been with BISD over twenty years as the principal of Bandera Middle School, principal of Bandera High School and as Chief Instructional Officer.

In regular business, the board recognized Bandera High School’s Texas Association of Future Educators team who won at national competition.

The team, composed of Amberly Patterson, Dorothy Magee and Samantha Reyna competed against thirty other states in the nation and placed first with their video presentation about Bandera ISD schools.

The board approved the Consent Agenda and there were no citizens comments.

During the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Jerry Hollingsworth gave an update on how House Bill 4545 would impact Bandera.

The board was also presented the new school year’s Board Planning Calendar.

Bandera County Chief Appraiser Shawn Davis presented the Appraisal District proposed budget for 2022.

Director of Assessment and Accountability Donald Tosh presented preliminary 2021 state assessment results and also reviewed the Texas Covid Learning Acceleration Supports that would be made available to the district.

Director of Facilities Dayle Heiner presented his plan to create an in-district grounds keeping program.

Chief Financial Officer Michael Neuman presented the district’s monthly financial report.

In the Regular Agenda, the Board voted to call an election for November 2, 2021. Two positions will be up for election: Places Three and Four.

At present, Tiffany Hayes and Jerry Schrum have signed up to run for Place 3. Incumbent Bo Mansfield and Christopher Dion have signed up to run for Place 4.

The board voted to give the Interim Superintendent the contractual authority to purchase Chapter 48 Attendance Credits, approved the Student Code of Conduct for 2022 and voted to approve changes to Board Policy EIC (LOCAL) and to approve Board Policy Update 117.

An extra position for a Functional Living teacher was approved.

The next meeting of the Bandera ISD Board of Trustees will be held on Monday, September 13 at 6:00 PM.
