Over one hundred children and parents attended the annual free Fish for Fun event on the Medina River at Bandera’s River Park. It was hosted by the City of Bandera on December 13.

Eager anglers of all ages looked forward to pizza, snacks, drinks, knit hats, gloves, blankets, and tackle from the event.

Everything an angler needed to fish was provided. Volunteers prepared the child sized rods for fishing as young anglers waited patiently and snacked on pizza provided by The Dough Joe.

Bennie Alcorta experienced a milestone during the event. He caught his first fish, a nice sized trout. Bennie’s father, Jacob, said, “This is the first time we’ve been here. We just heard about it and I thought we’d have fun.”

Jacob guided Bennie through casting, and on the third cast Bennie caught a fish.

Even though the trout was small, every angler knows that any fish is better than no fish. Bennie and Jacob chose to practice ‘catch and release’ after pictures were taken to memorialize the day.

The City of Bandera coordinates the event with Texas Parks and Wildlife. One day a year, youngsters may fish without a license.

City Councilperson Toni Kunz remarked, “It’s really good to see the community turn out for this event and enjoy our natural resources.”

The event was sponsored by Bandera Electric Coop, Atmos Energy, Hondo National Bank, Lowe’s Market, The Dough Joe, and Ardurra Engineering. The Marshal’s Office, the Mayor and City Council member Toni Kunz were there to help organize. Andy Wilkerson gets huge thanks for prepping the tackle and helping the young anglers.
