He is Risen! He is Risen indeed! With these joyous words we introduce the good news of Easter.
Our Savior Jesus Christ, who was crucified, died, and was buried, has arisen from the dead. Death has been defeated. Victory over death and damnation has been assured for all who believe that Jesus Christ is true God who became a true man, who died on the cross to suffer the penalty for our sins, and who has arisen to life again.
We confess our sinful nature, that there is nothing we can do to save ourselves, that the penalty for our sin is death, that is, eternal separation from God; but that God, in His undeserved grace and mercy did not demand that we pay that penalty ourselves, but instead sent His own Son Jesus Christ to pay that penalty for our sins, dying that we might receive forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
We are slowly gaining the victory over the COVID-19 pandemic, through our use of social distancing, wearing masks, and getting immunized. We gain the victory over eternal death, not by anything we have done, but purely what God has done for us through the sacrifice of his son on the cross.
And now we celebrate God’s victory over death: Jesus rose from the dead, and lives eternally as our Lord and Savior, with His promise that whoever believes in Him shall also live with Him forever in His eternal kingdom.
So, we no longer fear death, because we know that with bodily death comes the resurrection from the dead and eternal life with God. On the last day when Jesus comes again we have His promise that all who trust in Him shall rise from the dead to live with Him in His heavenly kingdom.
He is risen! And all who believe this and trust in the gift of the forgiveness of sin and the reconciliation with God that comes through Christ’s death on the cross will rise with him to live forever with him forever. Praise God for this wonderful free and undeserved gift!
