Bandera Library Happenings

Posted in:

Countdown to Cowboy Mardi Gras! The Bandera Public Library is ready to Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler, y’all! Stop by the Library during the parade. The Friends of the Library will be hosting their monthly Book Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come by and pick up some great books while you are enjoying all the festivities.

This year, the library will also host a food truck during the parade. The Golden Girls Kitchen will be serving up great food for breakfast and transition to lunch items later in the day.

The Golden Girls are donating part of their proceeds to the library so fill your tummies with some yummies and help support your local library.

Next week is the monthly craft-making party for kids, so call the library or go on to our website to register your child. On Tuesday, February 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. we will be making handmade Valentine’s day cards.

If you can’t make it, not to worry. We will have to-go kits with all the materials and instructions and include a sweet treat for little Valentines. Make sure to follow the library on Facebook and Instagram to get updates on upcoming programs.

New out this week is “The Removed” by Brandon Hobson.

It has been fifteen years since their son Ray-Ray was killed in a police shooting. Each remaining member of the Echota family deals with their grief in their own way. Maria, the mother, struggles to keep up with the demands of her husband Ernest’s rapidly advancing Alzheimer’s. Their adult children retreat to solitude and drugs to deal with their pain. As the family’s annual bonfire approaches, the family girds themselves to celebrate the Cherokee National Holiday and to mourn the day Ray-Ray died. As the holiday approaches, the Echotas begin noticing the lines between this world and the next are blurring. The story is steeped in Cherokee folklore and tells a story of family and grief.

The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is still available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Check out www.banderacountylibrary.org for all up-to-date information.

Happy tales, y’all.

Mauri Guillen Fagan is the director of the Bandera County Public Library.
