My nightmare started with a simple request. Daniel, the intrepid editor of the Bandera Bulletin, emailed me one morning asking for any Bandera ghost stories. I had always heard the old 1881 jail was haunted. I’ve been in the jail plenty of times during the day, showing tourists and local folks the old sheriff’s office, the cell block where inmates carved graffiti into the floor, and the repaired spot in the limestone wall where a determined inmate had once chiseled through the mortar to escape. Nothing extraordinary had ever happened during those tours, no clacking chains or mournful moans. But I figured, nighttime could be different. This may be my opportunity to finally put the rumors of a haunting to rest.

Darrell Cavin would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in putting together the memorial service and candlelight vigil at Courtney Mountain Ranch for Skyler Cavin on August 29th. Thank you to Bobby Salyers and the Courtney family for allowing us to use the river site at the ranch on such short notice. Darrell’s family members, Karon Byrd, Lynn Cavin, Becky Braun, and Melinda Byrd were instrumental in putting together the beautiful service, and Darrell is forever grateful. Pastor Kyle Toomire of the Bandera United Methodist Church led a beautiful ceremony and made the heartache a little easier for all who were present.

The Bandera Lady Bulldogs fell in play at home to the Davenport Lady Wolves three games to zero. The Lady Bulldogs took the court without one of their seniors, Stella Brown, who rolled her ankle during the Boerne match last week. Brown looks to be out for the rest of the season due to the seriousness of the injury.

“If you don’t swing, you won’t hit!” is the lifelong guiding motto for the guest speaker at the November 13th Bandera Honors Veterans celebration on the County Courthouse lawn. United States Marine Corps retired Colonel and NASA Astronaut, Jack Lousma, will provide the keynote address during the 19th annual celebration.
