On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Bandera freshman football team wrestled the Bears from LaVernia at Bulldog Stadium. After kicking off to LaVernia, the Bulldog defense was stout but could not stop the Bear offense as it proceeded down the field.

The LaVernia running game chipped away at the Bandera defenders until eventually scoring on a 1yd touchdown run after a long, time-consuming drive. They tacked on a 2pt conversion to make the score 8-0. The Bulldogs then began a solid drive of their own which included a running game featuring quarterback Utah Hicks and running backs Walker Starnes and Brayton Schmidt. Tight end J.T. Milner also contributed a nice catch and open field run for a first down on a pass from Hicks. The drive would be halted before completion due to the Bear defense stiffening and Bulldog receivers having a hard time getting a handle on a couple of passes.  In the 2nd quarter, LaVernia was able to impose their will throughout and ran off 30 unanswered points to take a 38-0 halftime lead.

The freshman showed their heart by rallying in the 3rd quarter with a nice drive that resulted in a touchdown run by Utah Hicks. The blocking of offensive lineman Andy Zimmell, Nick Salas, Jacob Kenney, Rio Salinas, Andrew Bachman and Roman Soto led the way for the Bulldog ball carriers. The Bandera defense stepped up in the 3rd quarter as well with a fumble recovery by Kolton Duncan and key tackles by numerous defenders including Aiden Leal, Elijah MacNeil, Schmidt, Hicks, Milner and Starnes. However, in the 4th quarter, LaVernia was able to tack on another touchdown and the Bulldog offense was not able to add to their earlier success to leave the final score at 46-6 LaVernia.

The Bulldog freshman, along with the JV and Varsity, will have an open week this week and then resume action on Oct. 11 when they travel to Wimberley to open the district portion of the schedule.
