The Bandera Lady Bulldogs varsity basketball team participated in the Hondo Owls Basketball tournament this past weekend and came home with a 2-2 record for their efforts.

Bandera opened the tournament playing a very skilled San Antonio Christian team and lost to the eventual tourney champions, 83-32.

Next, the Lady Bulldogs took on S. A. Jefferson, the same team we opened the season with, and we played a much better ball game but went into the locker room down by a 26-17 score at the half.

We could cut down the deficit but couldn't finish easy baskets. The girls showed great effort and hustle but fell short with a score of 51-36.

Our third game was against 5A Medina Valley, whom we had played right before the Thanksgiving break. Bandera came to play and we opened up the first quarter tied, 11-11. The Lady Dogs outscored the Lady Panthers 19-11 in the second to take a 30-22 lead at halftime.

We were on fire in the third, putting up 20 points on the board while holding the Lady Panthers to just 4, to extend the lead to 50-26 going into the fourth.

We were off in the fourth, only scoring 5, but were able to maintain the lead and come out with a victory, 55-43.

Due to the Lady Dogs beating Medina Valley, Medina Valley beating Jefferson and Jefferson beating us, it came down to a points system to determine places, so our final game of the tournament would be against S. A. Harlan.

Still feeling pretty good after the victory over Medina Valley, we played very well against Harlan. Bandera started off fast, scoring 17 in the first and leading at the half, 23-16.

After a few adjustments at half time, the Lady Dogs kept Harlan scoreless in the third while scoring 20 and extending the lead in the fourth to secure a 50-24 win.

We finished the tournament in fourth place with a 2-2 record.

If we have learned anything from this tournament, it is that we need to make free-throws and we can’t have an off quarter much less two, as that puts us in a bind. Again, we are growing together as team, learning new defenses and working out the small things in our offense. I am proud of the Lady Dogs and willingness to play hard no matter what.

The tournament games move our season record to 4-10 and we will be in Devine for their tournament this upcoming weekend.
